Student Recital: Samantha Carter, violin

Undergraduate violinist Samantha Carter performs her junior solo recital alongside doctoral pianist and previous concerto competition winner Eric Tran. The program will feature late romantic and mid-20th century repertoire from Johannes Brahms, Ernest Chausson, and Sergei Prokofiev. Brahm's Violin Sonata No.1 in G major, Chausson's Poeme, and Prokofiev's Op.115 Solo Violin Sonata vividly portray the rapid evolution of music over the roughly fifty-year period in which the three pieces were written.

Patrick Hines, a second year DMA student under the instruction of Professor Daniel Grabois, will present a recital of music written for the woodwind quintet.    The recital will feature the infrequently performed Quintet for Winds, written by Arnold Schoenberg. Stephanie Hyde, a sophomore at UW-Madison, will be performing her second solo recital at UW. She is a mathematics and bassoon performance major studying under Prof. Marc Vallon. Works by Vivaldi, Grovelz, Rossini, Weber, and even Beyonce will be performed. She will be accompanied by Kyle Johnson, Midori Samson, Chia Yu Hsu, Juliana Mesa-Jaramilo, Amanda Sealock, Lana Hantzsch, Anna Luebke, Rachel Riese, and Hannah Kasun.

For this special event,  John Wesley Wright will present a recital of a variety of African-American music including examples of calls and chants, children’s game songs, spirituals and ring shouts, hymns and gospels, civil rights era songs, and contemporary songs.
