French orchestral textures and sinuous melodies combine beautifully in Salomé, one of the pieces Melanie Bonis dedicated to women of legend. Scheherazade, another legendary woman, her story, and the stories she tells the sultan in the Arabian Nights, inspired Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov to compose a colorful and lush piece for orchestra. His Scheherazade has been a favorite of audiences since its premiere in 1888. Before the intermission, tubist Joshua Biere, winner of the 2021 Mead Witter School of Music Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, will perform Landskap, Lundquist’s concertino for Tuba, strings and piano.
