Program: Coleman: Seven O’Clock Shout; Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 2; Elgar: Enigma Variations
A program linked through dedications, these three pieces the UWSO will perform pay homage to the people in the composers’ lives. Valerie Coleman’s Seven O’Clock Shout was written in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to honor first responders. More intimate in his dedication, Frederic Chopin confessed to a friend that the beautiful second movement of his Piano Concerto No. 2 was inspired by Konstancja Gladkowska, with whom he was secretly in love. Shuguang Gong, 2021 Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition winner, will be the soloist. The last UWSO concert of the year will close with Elgar’s Enigma Variations. This very famous collection of orchestral miniatures are all enigmatically dedicated to his “friends pictured within.”
