Adam Schoenberg: Finding Rothko (2006)
Modest Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition (orch. Ravel)
The UW-Madison Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Chad Hutchinson presents a gallery tour: two works inspired by visual art. The program opens with Adam Schoenberg’s Finding Rothko, which depicts four Abstract Expressionist paintings by the Russian-American master (read the composer’s notes here), and concludes with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (in the classic Ravel orchestration), a set of vignettes evoking drawings and watercolors by Viktor Hartmann.
