UW Jazz Orchestra & Sun Prairie High School Jazz I Ensemble (CANCELED)

March 11 @ 7:30 pm

- Free
Due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19 and the directive from the Chancellor’s office to cancel events of more than 50 people, this concert is canceled.
The UW JAZZ ORCHESTRA, directed by John and Carolyn Peterson Chair of Jazz Studies, Dr. Johannes Wallmann, workshops and performs music ranging from the classic big band repertoire to contemporary and cutting-edge concert jazz music by today’s leading jazz composers. The Orchestra was founded in 1968 as the Mead Witter School of Music’s first jazz and popular music ensemble by trombone professor Allen Chase. Its previous directors have included bassist Richard Davis, saxophonist Les Thimmig, trombonist Claude Cailliet, and trumpeter Jim Doherty.
Opening the concert will be SUN PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ I ENSEMBLE, directed by Steve Sveum. 2019 marked the 6th consecutive year (and 12 years total) that this highly accomplished, sophisticated and always swinging high school band was selected among 15 finalists nationwide for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington competition, traveling to New York to work with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center band.
Free and unticketed
