Join us for two days of pure brass splendor, held annually since 2014! Featuring four brass alumni for two days of master classes and concerts with UW-Madison brass faculty and students. With Amy Schendel, associate professor of trumpet at the University of Iowa; Adam Unsworth, professor of horn at the University of Michigan; Patrick Pfister, principal trombone of the Omaha Symphony; and Kent Eshelman, associate professor of tuba and euphonium at Baylor University.
All events are free and open to the public.

The full brass ensemble will perform Giovanni Gabrieli’s Canzon Septimi et Octavi Toni a 12, one of numerous parts of his late 16th century collection Sacrae Symphoniae. Written to take advantage of the layout and acoustic characteristics of St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, the piece alternates between three different choirs of instruments to reverberate and amplify sound around the room.
About Amy Schendel:
Trumpeter Dr. Amy Schendel currently plays with the Iowa Brass Quintet and Contrapunctus Brass Trio. Previous positions include Spoleto Festival USA, Wisconsin Brass Quintet, Madison Symphony Orchestra, Tanglewood Music Festival, National Repertory Orchestra, and Civic Orchestra of Chicago. She has also won trumpet positions with the United States Marine Band, “The President’s Own,” and the United States Air Force Ceremonial Band, Washington, D.C.
As a featured guest soloist, Dr. Schendel has played with the Indiana University Orchestra, University of Iowa Orchestra and Band, and Texas Woman’s University Wind Ensemble. She has also performed extensively with Minnesota Orchestra, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Iowa, Texas Winds. Dr. Schendel has also performed in Europe with the Augsburger Philharmoniker and chamber concerts in Munich, Dachau, Augsburg, and Berlin. Her first solo and chamber music recording, Full Power, released in 2010, features “Abe Lincoln’s Song Book”, written by Douglas Hill for the Contrapunctus Brass Trio and narration. Dr. Schendel’s second solo and chamber music recording, Uncommon Ground: Contemporary Works for Trumpet with Horn, Trombone, Piano and Organ, was released by MSR Classics in 2014.
Recent performances include soloing in 2015 with the Oregon Symphonic Band; brass trio recitals in 2016 at the University of Oregon, Pacific Lutheran University, and Pacific University; orchestral performances with the Eugene Symphony and the Portland Chamber Orchestra. In addition, Dr. Schendel has presented and performed as a featured soloist at the Iowa Band Masters Association and the International Trumpet Guild Conference. Her performances with the Contrapunctus Brass Trio include the Iowa Band Masters Association, International Women’s Brass Conference, International Horn Conference and International Trumpet Guild Conference. The trio performances featured works commissioned by the Contrapunctus Brass Trio, composed in collaboration with Joseph Blaha and Douglas Hill.
Dr. Schendel has studied with John Aley, John Rommel, Robert Baca, Manny Laureano, Uwe Kleindienst, and Gary Bordner. She has degrees from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Indiana University and University of Wisconsin-Madison. While at Madison, she was a Paul J. Collins Wisconsin Distinguished Fellow and was co-author of a grant entitled Western Wisconsin Cultural Initiative, providing supplemental music performances to rural western Wisconsin school districts. Since 2009, Dr. Schendel is the trumpet professor at the University of Iowa.
About Adam Unsworth:
Before coming to Michigan, Adam Unsworth served as Fourth Horn of The Philadelphia Orchestra from 1998 to 2007. Prior to his appointment in Philadelphia, he spent three years as Second Horn of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He also served as a guest Principal horn with the St. Louis Symphony as well as Principal horn of the Colorado Music Festival.
A former faculty member at Temple University, he has appeared at many universities throughout the United States as a recitalist and clinician. He has made several solo and chamber appearances at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall. Mr. Unsworth received his formal training at Northwestern University, where he studied with former Chicago Symphony Orchestra members Gail Williams and Norman Schweikert. He continued with graduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with Douglas Hill. He later recorded Jazz Set for Solo Horn, released in 2001 as part of Thoughtful Wanderings, a compilation of Hill’s works for horn. In 2000, the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music named him their Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. In 2006 Adam released his first jazz CD entitled Excerpt This!, which features five of his original compositions for jazz sextet and three unaccompanied works.
About Kent Eshelman:
Kent Eshelman is Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium. Prior to his appointment at Baylor, he taught at Northern Arizona, Western Kentucky, and Grand Valley State universities. He is Principal Tuba of the Waco Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the orchestras of Grand Rapids, San Antonio, and Toledo. He received his education at the University of Michigan (BM, BFA), the University of Wisconsin-Madison (MM), and Michigan State University (DMA). At UW-Madison he held the Prize University Fellowship and at Michigan State the University Distinguished Fellowship. As a soloist, he has won first place in many competitions, including the Jeju (Korea) and Leonard Falcone (USA) international competitions. In Europe he gave the world-premiere performances of solos by Bruce Broughton and Anthony Plog. His solo CD, Flavors, won the Roger Bobo Award for Excellence in Recording, and he has also released a jazz tuba CD (Life is Good), a brass quintet CD (Four American Stories), and a boogie-woogie and stride piano CD (In the Pocket). In 2015, he received an Outstanding Professor Award from Baylor University.
About Patrick Pfister:
Golden Valley, MN, native Patrick Pfister has been Principal Trombonist of the Omaha Symphony since 2010. Before coming to Omaha, Patrick held the same position with the Columbus (IN) Philharmonic while a student at Indiana University. Patrick has also performed with the Madison and held fellowships at Tanglewood, National Repertory Orchestra, and Bar Harbor Brass Week.
As a soloist, Patrick was a winner at the 2007 Eastern Trombone Workshop, a finalist in the 2007 ITA Robert Marsteller and Frank Smith solo competitions, and won the Indiana University Brass Concerto Competition twice, on both tenor and alto trombone. The 2015-16 season will mark Patrick’s solo debut with the Omaha Symphony when he will perform Nino Rota’s Trombone Concerto.
Patrick earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Wisconsin as a student of Mark Hetzler and his master’s degree at Indiana University as a student of Carl Lenthe. Additionally, Patrick has studied with Douglas Wright, Peter Ellefson, Thomas Ashworth, Brian VanStavern and Mike Whipkey. While at Indiana University, Patrick minored in conducting, studying with Thomas Baldner, Charles Latshaw and Ben Bolter.
