School of Music : Upload Info
Uploading MP3 files for graduate applicants
Submitting Prelimiary Audition Recordings (Piano, Organ, Woodwinds, Voice, & Opera)

  • Files are submitted via the School of Music online application. See the full application instructions for complete details on the application process.
  • Preliminary audition recordings are acccepted online only for MM and DMA applicants in piano, organ, woodwinds, voice, or opera. Other areas of study require an audition CD or video; some require direct communication with the faculty to set up interviews and/or individualized auditions. Contact us with any questions.
  • Submit up to 5 MP3 files. You are limited to 100 megs TOTAL size of all your files, and all files must be in MP3 format and end with a <.mp3> extension.
  • Ideally you will end up with MP3 files that are neither too large nor too compressed.
  • You may add and delete preliminary audition MP3 files up until you complete and submit your application. If you need to reset and/or alter your application once it has been submitted, all MP3 files will be erased and will need to be uploaded again.

If you already have an audition recording, you only need to put it in a form that can be uploaded.
Be sure to include the Title, Composer, and Movement (if applicable) in the "Description" box when uploading each file.
  • If you already have MP3 files, then you're good to go.
  • If you have an audio CD, you can rip the CD onto your computer using CDex, which is free software. CDex will rip directly (almost directly) to mp3 files, perfect for uploading to the School of Music. If you use CDex to rip and transcode, be certain to set the mp3 options to "high quality" or "very high quality." CDex will output either a separate file for each track or a single file that aggregates all of your tracks. The single file option is simpler.
  • If you happen to have your audition files on your computer in wav format, you can likewise use CDex (or any number of software programs) to make mp3s.
  • If you need to edit your files or even make a recording from scratch, you might try the free audio software called Audacity. For simple cutting and pasting of files, Audacity works in the manner of many other music editors. If you configure the software properly, it will save directly as MP3.
  • If using iTunes to create audition recording files, make sure the resulting file is in MP3 format. This setting can be changed in the iTunes Preferences dialogue.
  • The best solution is to engage a recording professional to work with you, creating an audition recording with excellent audio quality that will reflect your ability in an appropriate way.
  • Make sure that the recording itself demonstrates the highest possible audio quality so that your performance can be evaluated successfully.
  • Do not edit within a selection or electronically alter the recording.
  • Never upload a video recording.
  • Never send an audition via email.

  • Repertoire requirements are listed on this page, by instrument. Click on your instrument in the left navigation bar and scroll down to the graduate admission requirements.
