Graduate students in the three musicologies meet regularly throughout the semester to hear prominent music historians, music theorists, and ethnomusicologists lecture on their current research in the Music Colloquium Series. Guest speakers, chosen by students and faculty under the auspices of a student-run coordinating committee, often meet on an informal basis with graduate students and lead roundtable discussions on a wide range of issues from the pedagogical implications of their work to new currents in the discipline. The Music Colloquium Series doubles as a forum in which faculty and graduate students present their own research and exchange ideas.

Graduate students also coordinate their own informal Journal Club that meets regularly to discuss readings of interest to the group and to provide another forum for students to collaborate on their research and create an intellectual community.

The Colloquium Committee also hosted a Writing Workshop during the first two weeks in the Fall of 2005 with a panel of speakers to focus on writing abstracts for conferences, conference papers, and dissertation chapters. The Colloquium Series also ended the series with a four-week "Spring Fling" where our own students presented their on-going research to the student and faculty body in 30-minute sessions.

The Midwest Graduate Music Consortium is a joint venture organized by graduate students from The University of Wisconsin at Madison, The University of Chicago, and Northwestern University. Conferences allow graduate students in various fields of music to come together and share ideas on a vast array of topics. Conferences are held annually, in the spring, at UW-Madison, the University of Chicago, or Northwestern.
