UW-Madison Summer Course Offering for Music Teachers

660-540 Advanced Instrumental [Music] Pedagogy
July 13 – August 2, 2009

The movable campus: a site-based approach to retooling for change in instrumental music programs.

This course will focus on knowledge and skill acquisition pertinent to instrumental teaching in general, including string teaching, in settings where changes are being required of the teacher or the program. Individuals will identify their own areas of need, including but not limited to instrumental skills, conducting, rehearsing, curriculum, assessment, learner characteristics, and administration. Instruction will include seminar meetings and individual instruction. Seminars will take place at the UW School of Music, with other instructional locations to be determined based on participant needs and projects.

660-497 Madison Early Music Workshop
July 11-18, 2009
This workshop provides the opportunity for prospective and in-service music teachers and conductors of vocal and instrumental ensembles to participate in a substantial professional development experience focusing on early music. Festival participants work with world-class guest artists in classes, lectures, and historically informed performances of early music. In celebration of the International Year of Astronomy, MEMF 2009 collaborates with the UW-Madison Dept. of Astronomy for Telescopic Vistas: Music of the Spheres. Guest artists/faculty include Piffaro, Marion Verbruggen, The Newberry Consort, Quicksilver, and The Venere Lute Quartet.

660-497 National String Instrument Repair Clinics
July 26 – 30, 2009
Sponsored by the National String Workshop, these intensive four-day clinics provide hands-on experiences for those interested in learning more about string instrument repair. Participants work on their own projects under the guidance of skilled repair specialists. Four tracks: Basic/Beginning Violin Family Repair (Duane Wilcox and Christopher Moore), Intermediate/Advanced Violin Family Repair (Christopher Germain), Bow Repair (David Orlin), and Fretted Instrument Repair (Wil Bremer).
