At the UW-Madison School of Music we deeply appreciate the support we receive from loyal alumni and friends.
Private gifts provide scholarships for deserving undergraduates, enable us to attract the best and brightest graduate students, help us to retain the most talented faculty and staff, and provide support for new initiatives.
As a graduate or a friend of the School, you truly have something to be proud of. And sending a contribution, whatever its size, is a great way to show your pride. Every gift makes a difference!
Opportunities to Give
- Scholarships. State funds cannot be used for this purpose; however, through private gifts, the School is now able to award nearly 200 undergraduate and graduate scholarships. Each reflects the particular interests of its donor. If you would like to make a contribution to the Music Excellence Fund for student scholarships at the School of Music, please give online (specifying the Music Excellence Fund) or make your check payable to University of Wisconsin Foundation, mailed to the address below.
- New Building Campaign The School of Music is in the "quiet phase" of its campaign to raise funds for a new building. We look forward to announcing our exciting plans in the coming months. For details on the campaign, please contact:

Email: mgcarlson@wisc.edu - Special Projects. There seems to be a never-ending supply of original projects worthy of funding in the School of Music: research, outreach, special concerts and master classes. Each year, private contributions support some of these projects.
- Endowed Professorships or Chairs. Endowed professorships allow the School to attract the most sought-after, experienced scholars and performers. While the salary of faculty members is almost always paid by the University, the endowment provides guaranteed funds for a particular faculty member to conduct research and hire graduate students.
Types of Gifts
Making a gift to the School of Music is easy, and it is always much appreciated.
There are two basic types of gifts: outright and deferred.
Outright gifts include cash gifts, corporate matching gifts, gifts of securities, and gifts of property.
Deferred gifts are simply gifts that are made in the present and received by the Foundation in the future. Some deferred gifts are straightforward, such as a bequest in a will. Others are more complex, providing current tax benefits as well as life income for the donor and/or beneficiary.
To make a cash gift ...
Through a secure University Foundation website. Gifts can be directed toward the general School of Music Fund, the Music Excellence Fund, or you can specify where you would like your contribution to be directed. Gifts may be made in memoriam through the website.
Mail your gift
For scholarship gifts, please see the "Music Excellence Fund" information on this page. For all other gifts, write out a check for the amount you would like to contribute and make it payable to the University of Wisconsin Foundation. Use the memo portion of your check to identify the specific project, department, or program to which you would like your gift to be applied. It is very important that you complete the memo portion of your check. We want to make sure your gift will be applied to your area of interest. And finally, mail your check to the following address:
