Program: Bacewicz: Overture; Nielsen: Concerto for Flute and Orchestra; Sibelius: Symphony No. 1

Duration: 1 hour and 15 minutes with intermission

The first concert of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Symphony Orchestra this year will feature music by three Northern European composers. The exciting Overture by Polish female composer Grazina Bacewicz shines in contrast with the vast soundscape and somber colors of Sibelius’ First Symphony. Conor Nelson, Mead Witter School of Music Professor of Flute, is the soloist in Nielsen’s Flute Concerto, a staple of the genre. All together, the perfect combination to celebrate the return of live performances to the Hamel Music Center.
