University Opera-“The Marriage of Figaro”

October 23, 2015 @ 7:00 pm

The Marriage of Figaro (W.A. Mozart)
David Ronis, Director
James Smith, Conductor
Music Hall

The Marriage of Figaro, Mozart and da Ponte’s masterpiece of comedy and intrigue, shows the two geniuses at the height of their powers.  Based upon the seminal play by Pierre Beaumarchais, Figaro represents the continuation of the story begun in The Barber of Seville.  In Mozart’s opera, the Count and Rosina are now married, but his philandering, and particularly his designs on Figaro’s fiancé, Susanna, lead to unexpected plot twists and turns.  Filled with hilarity and mirth, not to mention some of the most glorious music ever written, the opera also keenly depicts the underlying tension between the social classes and sexes in the 18th century.  Above all, Figaro is a work of consummate beauty and deep humanity – perhaps the quintessential example of the sublime elegance and balance of the classical style.
