Ensemble Duniya presents a unique program of concertos for world percussion and percussion ensemble, featuring soloists Neeraj Mehta on congas, Anthony Di Sanza on darbukka, and Shawn Mativetsky on tabla, with Jonathan Ovalle and Dan Piccolo on percussion.
The program will begin with Anthony Di Sanza performing his Second Concerto for Darbukka and Percussion Quartet, followed by Payton MacDonald’s Fourth Concerto for Tabla and Percussion Quartet, featuring Shawn Mativetsky on tabla. The program continues with Three Movements for Conga Soloist and Percussion Trio written by Jonathan Ovalle and featuring Neeraj Mehta as conga soloist. We will conclude the concert with a newly created collaborative work for percussion quintet, showcasing the traditions of Latin America, India, and the Middle East. Each work will offer different perspectives, showcasing a soloist who specializes in a particular world percussion tradition. Each of the composers have extensive backgrounds in both western percussion traditions as well as the traditions of the solo instrument, and have drawn on both to create a new genre of percussion concerti with percussion ensemble.
