B.M. Composition
Admission Requirements
Consideration for admission will be based on both an audition and on compositions submitted.

A recorded audition (CD or cassette tape) is required on a band or orchestral instrument, piano, voice, or guitar. Please see audition and other information on the School of Music Application Process.

In addition, you should submit the following:

  • Three scores of original compositions for a variety of performance media -- for example, solo instruments, chamber ensemble, orchestra, band, chorus, and/or electronic media. At least one of these scores should be in the form of a photocopy of your handwritten manuscript.
  • Recordings - CD preferred - of performances of as many as possible of the compositions included in the portfolio. Please submit a CD track list on a separate sheet. It is strongly recommended that at least one of the recordings be of a performance by traditional acoustic instruments -- that is, not a MIDI realization. If you choose to submit your recordings on cassette tape, each work must be on on a separate cassette.
  • A research paper that you have written in high school or college (music subject preferred).
  • A complete list of your compositions, including dates of composition, performance media, and duration, and a list of any awards and honors in composition that you may have received .
