Undergraduate Application and Audition Information
Why you should apply
The School of Music works in conjunction with the main undergraduate admissions office to determine whether you qualify for admission.
Most students will receive an admission decision from the university about a month after applying.
The audition is a very important part of a music major's admission decision. You will receive word about your admission to the School of Music several weeks after your audition.
1. Choose an audition day. Be prepared to submit all application materials by the deadline for your audition day.
Because so many prospective music majors tend to audition in February, we may or may not be able to accommodate all students on that day. Also, to be eligible for a music scholarship, you must audition no later than the February audition date.
2. Apply online to the University of Wisconsin-Madison's main admissions office.
3. Apply to the School of Music. The application materials include:
- A School of Music application form (PDF).
Downloadable as a PDF file, or contact the Undergraduate Admissions Coordinator for a paper copy. - An official copy of your transcript(s).
This is in addition to the copy you provided to the main admissions office. - Two recommendation letters (PDF)
The letters should come from two different people who can recommend you based on your musical abilities. Downloadable as a PDF file, or contact the Undergraduate Admissions Coordinator for a paper copy. - Copies of Audition Music -Voice Majors Only.
An accompanist is provided for voice auditions. If you plan to use our accompanist, please send your audition music at least two weeks in advance of your audition date. - Supplementary materials
For Composition Students Only
4. Complete an audition.
The School of Music will notify you of your specific audition time at least one week preceding the date you have chosen on your application.
Your audition will consist of a 10 to 15 minute performance for the faculty in your chosen area of study, as well as theory and piano placement tests (see below). Audition information:
On your audition day, the Music Theory Area will give a diagnostic theory exam (see more information and a sample test in PDF) to determine your preparedness for first-year college theory.
Beginning and Intermediate Piano Placement Auditions will be held for instrumentalists and vocalists.
Faculty and staff will be on hand to talk with you and your parents and answer any questions you may have.
5. Enjoy the process!
The process leading up to becoming a music major can seem daunting, especially for families who are unfamiliar with auditioning.
The National Association of Schools of Music is the national accrediting agency for music schools and music-related disciplines. Their website is helpful in providing prospective music majors and their parents questions to consider when applying to universities and conservatories. Additional information is located here.
If you have any questions about majoring in music, please don't hesitate to contact our Undergraduate Admissions Coordinator.
We look forward to seeing you at the University of Wisconsin-Madison!

Tips and Important Information for Applicants
Admissions decisions will be made only when your application file is complete.
Transcripts and recommendation letters can arrive separately from your School of Music application no later than two weeks before your audition date.
If you submit your UW Admissions and School of Music application materials to your high school to mail, inform your school that all music forms should be sent to the School of Music address and not to the general University Admissions Office.
If you audition by CD or cassette, be aware that the audition process is only final upon an audition in person for the faculty of the relevant area. You must audition in person to qualify for scholarship consideration.
