Sample First Scmester Schedule of Classes
First-year preliminary music majors usually carry a course load of 13-16 credits. UW students must register for at least 12 credits each semester to be considered full-time students. The following schedule can be a typical course load for a music student's first semester. Music advisor, Patti Atwood, will be present at the School Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) sessions during the summer to help incoming freshmen and college transfer students in planning their schedule and registering for classes for fall.

Lesson times are determined after the rest of your schedule is set. When you arrive on campus in the fall, you should give a copy of your class schedule to the professor of your major instrument, who will work a lesson time into your schedule. Most professors hold a 50-60 minute lesson time in addition to a Master Class each week.
In planning your schedule, leave time for attendance at your Master Class, which meets each week. In a master class each student with the same professor will perform one at a time with current repertoire in front of the rest of the group while the professor or guest artist offers suggestions and critiques, basically giving a public lesson.
Guitar Majors - For performing organization requirements, you may audition for choir, orchestra, or band to fulfill your organization requirement. See your music advisor at SOAR for more information.
Piano Majors - Freshmen accompanying assignments, which will be the equivalent for the required performing organization credit, will begin in second semester. Transfer piano students will be advised at SOAR.
At SOAR, students will not be able to register for courses that require an audition. Most auditions for performing organizations and piano lessons will be held in the week before classes begin. Students may register for those courses after audition results are posted the first week of class.
For initial advising and tentative evaluation of transfer music credits, students transferring from other colleges will need to send in advance of their advising session: official copies of final transcripts; syllabi and/or course descriptions for music classes; catalog from previous college(s). Additional information may be necessary for final evaluation of credit.
